Almiros wetland near Heraklion

Almiros spring is located at the northeastern side of Psiloritis, a few hundred meters far from the sea and 8 km. west from the city of Heraklion. It runs off a high water quantity into the sea, through the homonymous river of Almiros. The water of the spring, because somewhere deep in earth mixes with the sea, is brackish, with the exception of some months in the winter that is sweet and potable.

Water comes from the Psiloritis mountains and the surrounding plateaus and the hills which are nearby. The largest amount of water comes from Psiloritis sinkholes and its underground rivers.

A small artificial lake is formed around the spring, where in the past, grinding cereals watermills were acting in the area.

From the springs, starts the “Almyros” river, that finishes at the beach Ammoudara, after creating one of the most important wetlands of East Crete. In the wetland of Almyros one can find many birds, depending on the season, as well as clusters of the characteristic Cretan Phoenix (Phoenix theophrasti) found mainly in Crete.
