Walking in Crete – Kastelli of Kissamos to Polirinia

In Kissamos of Chania, which is the westernmost city of Crete, there is a very beautiful path that can offer you an unforgettable hike. It is the path from Kastelli of Kissamos to Polyrrinia, with a length of 6,5 km.

You can reach Kastelli, by car, following the Heraklion-Chania National road, by bus, or by boat from Peloponnese.

For the route from Kastelli to Polirrinia, you will need about 1.30 hours while the best time for hiking, is in spring and autumn. The route is easy as this is a paved road with very small slopes.

Walking on the main street of Kissamos, and east of the central square of Eleftherios Venizelos, you will come across a smaller square. This is where the asphalt road which will take you south to Polirrinia begins.

On the way you will enjoy a verdant scenery of olive groves and at 2 km you will find a small settlement, the Kato Palaikastro, while at the southern side you will see the characteristic peak on which the ancient Polirrinia was built.

After crossing another small picturesque settlement of Crete, Corfiana in about 1.5 km away, you will continue to the settlement of Gregoriana, and after 1.3 km you will reach Polirrinia.

You will see the view of the bay of Kissamos as well as the eastern passages between the hills to the plain of Kissamos.

To the south Polirrinia, faces the entire Kissamos hinterland and to the south the Libyan Sea. To the south and east, it has a visual contact with the nearby castle of Malathyros, and to the east with the Rocka Fort.

The current settlement of Polirinia, is many centuries old, and its tallest neighborhood, has occupied a section of the ancient city to the south of the hill.
