The Gorge of Myloi – A different Gorge

Myloi Gorge is just 8km away from Rethymno, and it is a watermill and waterworks complex. It’s a paved, hiking and signalized gorge with 2,5 km long.

Myloi is an amazing gorge in the green, with an abandoned settlement next to it. The watermills that the locals built during the Venetian occupation were in operation until the 1970s. The flora and fauna of the Myloi gorge is indescribable.

Right in the gorge and built on the rocks there is the church of Agios Ioannis. Going to a concrete bridge to the left in Epano Myloi there is a traditional tavern in which the hiker can rest, enjoy the wonderful scenery and get information on the history of this amazing gorge.

Leaving the tavern and following the path leading to the sea, after 200 meters you pass the church of the 5 Parthenes. When the path becomes dirt and after about 150 meters you will encounter a restored mill. Still following the dirt trail for 150 m it leads you to the bottom of the gorge where there is a cluster of mills where you can see even the stone channels that were supplying them with water.

In Kato Myloi on the opposite side of the gorge you pass an arch to reach the small church of Agia Paraskevi. Throughout the journey there are some points created by nature itself, between water and green to revitalize and rest.

In an hour you have already explored the main part of the gorge and in 15 minutes you can ascend to the main rural road of the gorge, after crossing the left path with the small river to get to the opposite bank. You enter the main road, going right and after about 200 meters, you reach the junction of the main road, having to your right the National road.

If you want to enjoy a refreshing swim, turn left to head to the sea, or visit the picturesque Perivolia settlement or the town of Rethymno.
