Kato Zakros – The “Gorge of the Dead” and the Minoan Palace

The picturesque Kato Zakros, located on the southeastern edge of Crete, is about 40 kilometers away from Sitia. The area is ideal for those looking for a relaxing holiday and has beautiful beaches and great hiking trails which worth exploring.

The Gorge of Kato Zakros or “Gorge of the Dead”, ending in Kato Zakros, is a gorge of great beauty with large caves on its walls and consists a part of the E4 European Trail. In some of these caves, tombs from the Minoan era were found while finds of great archaeological value, were hidden in them. Because of these tombs the gorge is also called “Gorge of the Dead” and the caves “Caves of the Dead”.

Zakros’ most famous attraction is he Minoan Palace of Zakros, just a few meters from the beach, which is the largest Minoan Palace, after Knossos, Phaistos and Malia. It was built in 1900 BC. and was finally destroyed in 1450 BC, like the rest of Crete’s palaces.

This is the only large palace on Crete, where much of its treasure has remained intact, giving archaeologists a lot of information. The findings were gold leaves, ivory, jewelry, vases, etc.

Zakros has three different beaches separated by rocky cliffs and the sea is usually calm there, as it is protected from the winds. The central beach of the settlement has the main organization with umbrellas. To the north, the small bay, called “at Karantonis”, is the boats anchorage in the area while the northernmost bay is called “Harbor”.
