Monastery of Odigitria

The Monastery of Odigitria is located near the village of Sivas, south of Heraklion. In the 14th century when it was built, it was surrounded by a wall, parts of which can still be seen today. Formerly the church of the monastery was for both monks and nuns and was at the center of it. Inside it there are preserved frescoes, the iconostasis, etc. In the north gate there is the Tower of Xopateras who was a brave priest ordained in the Monastery, but later abandoned it because he killed a janissary. His subsequent contribution to the extermination of the janissaries was very important.

Your visit to this monastery will be as special if you visit it during the summer months when you can enjoy a swim in the beautiful beach of Martsalo located very near or visit the beach of Vathi, a beach of incomparable beauty.
