November 11th – The patron saint of the city of Heraklion

Saint Minas, is the patron saint of the city of Heraklion. His memory is celebrated every year on November 11, which is a holiday for the whole city.

The temple of Saint Minas is built in the city center in a large, paved square. The Saint is depicted as a mounted, Roman soldier and Nikos Kazantzakis, has written about him:… The whole city was a fortress, every soul was also a fortress under eternal siege and had a Saint as its captain, Saint Minas, the protector of the great castle.

Many miracles are attributed to the Saint. So, on May, 23 1941,he is believed to have protected his temple during the bombing of Heraklion.

Every year, on the day of the feast, a crowd arrives to the temple for the liturgy in order to honor his memory, while the air force participates to the celebration with the impressive formations, made by its planes, flying over the city. Unfortunately, this year, due to the quarantine, that has been imposed because of COVID-19, nothing will be the same.
